Full-Time Speech-Language Interpreter (SLI)
Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Requirements:
Applicants must meet all local and state requirements to apply. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, deaf education, or related field.
  • Certification as a Speech-Language Interpreter (SLI) issued by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED).
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and other sign language systems, as well as proficiency in spoken English.
  • Understanding of and adherence to relevant federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines governing special education, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and proficiency in providing sign language interpretation and transliteration services to facilitate communication between students, teachers, and other educational personnel.
  • Ability to interpret classroom instruction, discussions, lectures, and other educational activities in real-time, ensuring accurate and effective communication for students who rely on sign language as their primary mode of communication.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish rapport with students, teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders, and to collaborate effectively as part of the educational team.
  • Commitment to upholding professional ethics and confidentiality standards, and to promoting an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide sign language interpretation and transliteration services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring access to educational instruction, discussions, presentations, and other activities in the classroom and school-wide settings.
  • Interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa, conveying meaning accurately and effectively while maintaining appropriate register, tone, and style in alignment with the context and content of the communication.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other educational personnel to identify students' communication needs, develop appropriate accommodations and support strategies, and promote students' participation, engagement, and success in the academic environment.
  • Assist students in accessing and understanding instructional materials, assignments, assessments, and other educational resources, providing clarification, explanation, and scaffolding as needed to support learning and comprehension.
  • Facilitate communication between students and their peers, teachers, and other school staff, promoting social interaction, collaboration, and inclusion in academic and extracurricular activities.
  • Monitor students' progress and participation in educational activities, and communicate regularly with teachers, administrators, and parents/guardians regarding students' performance, needs, and goals.
  • Participate in individualized education program (IEP) meetings, team meetings, and professional development activities to contribute insights, share expertise, and collaborate with colleagues in supporting students' educational and communication needs.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of interpreter services provided, student progress, and communication-related data, and comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies governing the role of SLIs in educational settings.
