A school near Trussville, Alabama, is seeking a skilled and passionate Sign Language Interpreter to join their team for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. The Sign Language Interpreter will play a crucial role in facilitating effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, teachers, and staff. Responsibilities:

  • Provide sign language interpretation and transliteration services to deaf or hard-of-hearing students in the high school setting.
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and staff during academic classes, extracurricular activities, and school events.
  • Support students in understanding and participating in classroom discussions, lectures, presentations, and group activities.
  • Interpret and translate written materials, including textbooks, handouts, and classroom assignments, into sign language or vice versa.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to ensure effective inclusion and accessibility for students.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the role.
  • Continuously develop and improve sign language and interpreting skills through professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter or equivalent qualification.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of deaf culture.
  • Previous experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Ability to effectively interpret in a variety of classroom subjects and extracurricular activities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Sensitivity, patience, and adaptability in working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a high school caseload effectively.
