Position Overview
We are seeking a qualified and professional Sign Language Interpreter to support effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students, staff, parents, and others within an educational setting school in Columbia, SC for the 2026–2027 school year. The ideal candidate will provide accurate interpretation services while maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services in classroom instruction, meetings, school events, and related activities
- Facilitate communication between students, teachers, administrators, and peers
- Interpret spoken language into ASL and ASL into spoken language accurately and effectively
- Support students in accessing educational materials and classroom participation
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and school policies
- Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers
- Assist with promoting an inclusive and supportive learning environment
- Attend staff meetings, training, and professional development as required
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification preferred
- State licensure/certification as required
- Previous experience in a school or educational setting preferred
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively with students of varying ages and abilities
