Make a meaningful impact by supporting a first-grade student who has experienced significant language deprivation. This contract position is full-time, offering 37.5 hours per week for both the current and upcoming school years, and is based near Interlochen, MI. As a Sign Language Interpreter with teaching capabilities in American Sign Language, your skills will help enrich a young student’s educational journey, providing critical support for communication and learning.
Qualifications & Experience:
- EIPA score of 4.0 preferred; will consider candidates with lower scores and can assist with temporary certification as needed
- Skilled in school-based Sign Language Interpreting and teaching American Sign Language
- Compassionate approach toward students with significant language delays or deprivation
- Professional experience supporting early elementary children is advantageous
- Ability to collaborate with teachers and educational staff to facilitate student inclusion and engagement
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a dedicated sign language interpreter for a first-grade boy with severe language needs
- Facilitate classroom communication, ensuring the student has full access to instruction and peer interactions
- Adapt sign language communication in response to the student’s developmental and educational level
- Partner with educators to implement effective teaching strategies using American Sign Language
- Actively monitor and report on student progress to support his language development and learning goals
