Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and comfortable facilitating communication in educational settings
- Experience as a Sign Language Interpreter or supporting students as a Teacher of American Sign Language preferred
- Knowledge of interpreting ethics and standards, especially in a K-12 school setting
- Ability to clearly convey lessons, conversations, and classroom activities
- Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset for working alongside teachers, staff, and families
- Certification or credentials in ASL interpreting and/or relevant state authorizations
Primary Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into ASL and vice versa for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in classrooms and during school activities
- Support teachers by ensuring students have accessible instruction and are engaged in lesson content
- Enhance student participation and social interaction by accurately translating group discussions, presentations, and one-on-one conversations
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times while advocating for students’ communication needs
- Adapt interpreting style and methods according to specific grade levels, academic subjects, and individual student requirements
- Attend and facilitate communication during meetings, extracurricular events, and assemblies as assigned
