Job Description
A school district in Norfolk, Virginia is seeking a qualified Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) for a full‑time, virtual school‑based contract. This remote position serves K–12 students and focuses on providing interpreting services to support communication access for Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students in educational settings. Candidates who are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and experienced in virtual interpretation are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Provide virtual ASL interpretation services for students during classroom instruction, meetings, and school activities
- Interpret spoken language into sign language and signed communication into spoken English
- Support student access to instruction, peer interaction, and participation in virtual learning environments
- Collaborate remotely with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers
- Maintain professional ethics and confidentiality in accordance with interpreting standards
- Assist in facilitating communication during virtual IEP meetings and school‑related events
- Adapt interpreting methods to meet individual student communication needs
- Maintain accurate documentation and comply with district and state guidelines
Qualifications
- EIPA score of 3.5 or higher or RID/NIC certification required
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Previous experience providing virtual interpreting services preferred
- Ability to pass background checks and district clearances
- Reliable high‑speed internet and access to appropriate technology required
Education
- High school diploma or higher required
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, or a related field preferred
Experience
- Previous experience in a school or educational interpreting setting preferred
- Experience working with Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students strongly preferred
- Experience with remote or telepractice interpreting platforms preferred
Skills
- Strong ASL and English communication skills
- Ability to interpret accurately and in real time in virtual settings
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
- Proficiency with video conferencing and virtual learning platforms
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality

Work Hours
- Monday–Friday
- School‑day schedule
- Approximately 37–40 hours per week
