- Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter or eligibility to obtain necessary state credentials
- Familiarity with Deaf culture and sensitivity to individual student needs
- Ability to collaborate with teachers, specialists, and other interpreters
- Professionalism, reliability, and the flexibility to adapt to dynamic classroom environments
Key responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, school events, meetings, and activities for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students
- Accurately convey spoken information into ASL and vice versa, ensuring full access to academic content
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all student matters
- Adapt interpreting techniques to suit various subjects and student learning levels
- Foster a positive and respectful classroom climate that supports student participation
- Communicate effectively with teachers and support staff to align on goals and student progress
- Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as requested
