Sign Language Interpreter in Cypress, TX

Make a difference in the life of a high school student by providing specialized communication support as a part-time American Sign Language Interpreter. This contract opportunity is available in a supportive school environment, working with a 9th-grade student in a behavioral classroom. The student uses cochlear implants, hearing aids, and an ALD device, and requires an ASL interpreter specifically for instructional periods. The role is Fridays only, averaging 6.5 hours per day, and will also include opportunities to substitute on other days if needed. This position is part of a job share arrangement, collaborating with another interpreter who is available Monday through Thursday.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience in educational settings
- Ability to facilitate communication for students with hearing differences
- Experience working with behavioral or special needs students is highly desirable
- Understanding of assistive listening devices and adaptive technology
- Current licensure or certification as a Sign Language Interpreter required
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide ASL interpretation for instructional times only — excluding lunch, arrival, and dismissal periods
- Adapt interpreting style to meet the student’s unique needs and communication preferences
- Work closely with educational staff to ensure effective classroom participation
- Offer coverage for other days as a substitute language facilitator, as needed
- Support the student’s adjustment back into the mainstream classroom setting
