Make an impact in the educational journey of students who are deaf or hard of hearing as a skilled Sign Language Interpreter or ASL Para in a supportive school environment. This contract-based opportunity involves working onsite, approximately 30 hours per week (6 hours per day), providing consistent communication access and support for young learners throughout the academic year.
Key Qualifications:
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf OR:
- EIPA score of 4.0 or above, the ESSE-I/R, or NAD/ACCI assessment
- Candidates with EIPA under 4.0 are welcome and will be referred to as ASL Paraprofessionals
- Experience with voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting in classroom settings desirable
- Ability to assist students in academic subjects (reading, writing, math) as well as life and vocational skills
- Comfortable working with both elementary and intermediate school students—preference honored when applying
- Professional, reliable, and collaborative attitude required
Position Responsibilities:
- Facilitate seamless communication between hard of hearing/deaf students, hearing peers, teachers, and school staff
- Provide accurate, ethical interpreting in both group and one-on-one contexts
- Support students academically and help foster their independence
- Monitor and assist during classroom, outdoor, and community activities
- Adapt interpreting style to meet individual student needs
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to established ethical standards
