A rewarding part-time opportunity is available for a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to support a 9th-grade student in a behavioral classroom setting. Based near Houston, TX, this contract role focuses on facilitating communication for a high school student who utilizes cochlear implants, hearing aids, and an assistive listening device in class. The student identifies as hearing but relies on interpreters during instructional periods due to unintelligible speech. This is a job-share arrangement, with scheduled hours on Fridays only and the possibility to substitute on other days if needed.
Key Requirements:
- Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and experienced in educational interpreting
- Certification or licensure as a Sign Language Interpreter required
- Prior experience supporting students with hearing impairments, especially those using cochlear implants or ALDs, preferred
- Comfortable working in behavioral classroom environments with high school students
- Able to collaborate and coordinate effectively as part of a job-share with another interpreter
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide in-class ASL interpretation for a 9th-grade student during instructional times (excluding lunch, arrival, and dismissal)
- Adjust interpreting methods to suit the student’s unique communication needs
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in compliance with educational standards
- Fill in as a substitute language facilitator when the primary facilitator is absent (Monday–Thursday as needed)
- Collaborate with classroom staff and special education teams to optimize student engagement and participation
