Qualifications & Desired Background:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English
- Current certification through EIPA, RID, or an equivalent recognized body
- Previous experience as a Sign Language Interpreter, preferably within educational settings
- Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact positively with students, staff, and families
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions
- Adaptability to different age groups, classroom styles, and instructional activities
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and impartial interpretation between spoken English and ASL for students in classroom and school-related activities
- Collaborate closely with educators to ensure full access to curriculum and information
- Support students’ participation in school events, assemblies, and extracurricular activities
- Employ appropriate interpreting techniques for individual student needs
- Participate in IEP meetings and help develop strategies for effective communication access
- Maintain timely and thorough documentation as required by school policies
- Foster a supportive and inclusive environment for deaf and hard of hearing students
