Sign Language Interpreter

Job Description

A school district in Oroville, California is seeking a qualified Sign Language Interpreter for a full‑time, school‑based contract. This position serves K–12 students and focuses on providing interpreting services to support communication access for Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students in educational settings. Candidates who are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and committed to student success are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ASL interpretation services for students in classroom instruction, meetings, and school activities
  • Interpret spoken language into sign language and signed communication into spoken English
  • Support student access to instruction, peer interaction, and school participation
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers
  • Maintain professional ethics and confidentiality in accordance with RID standards
  • Assist in facilitating communication during IEP meetings and school‑related events
  • Adapt interpreting style to meet individual student communication needs
  • Maintain accurate records and comply with district and state guidelines

Qualifications

  • EIPA score of 3.5 or higher or RID/NIC certification (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and educational interpreting practices
  • Ability to pass background checks, fingerprinting, and district clearances
  • Credentialing support may be available for eligible candidates

Education

  • High school diploma or higher required
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, or related field preferred

Experience

  • Previous experience in a school or educational interpreting setting preferred
  • Experience working with children or adolescents strongly preferred
  • New interpreters with appropriate credentials are encouraged to apply

Work Hours

  • Monday–Friday
  • 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Approximately 37–40 hours per week
