Remote Educational Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) - Louisiana
Qualifications
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field from an accredited program
• Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.0+ or higher (passing score on the EIPA Written Test required)
• Active Louisiana Ancillary Certificate: Educational Interpreter issued by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) or current registration on the Louisiana Interpreter Registry (Louisiana Commission for the Deaf / LCD)
• National certification (RID / NIC, BEI, or NAD III+) accepted in lieu of EIPA where applicable
• Minimum of 2+ years of experience (K-12 educational interpreting and/or tele-interpreting preferred)
• Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE), and/or Pidgin Signed English (PSE)
• Strong communication, professional ethics, and time-management skills
• Comfortable using teletherapy/video conferencing platforms and remote visual tools
Key Responsibilities
Interpreting & Classroom Communication
• Provide real-time virtual educational interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students across academic instruction and school-related activities
• Accurately facilitate expressive and receptive communication between students, hearing teachers, staff, and peers
• Interpret classroom lectures, class discussions, instructional videos, assemblies, and school-wide announcements
• Adapt signing and communication style to align with the student's language proficiency and developmental needs
Collaboration & School Support
• Collaborate with general and special education teachers, Teachers of the Deaf (TOD/DHH), case managers, and speech-language pathologists
• Provide input regarding visual accessibility, lighting, camera angles, and line-of-sight optimization in the virtual classroom
• Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team conferences, and student planning sessions as requested
Professional Standards & Ethics
• Adhere strictly to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct and educational interpreting ethics
• Maintain professional boundaries while actively fostering student autonomy and classroom independence
• Maintain confidentiality regarding all student interactions and educational records in accordance with FERPA and district policies
Technology & Virtual Delivery
• Utilize secure video conferencing platforms and digital classroom tools to deliver clear, uninterrupted visual interpreting
• Troubleshoot basic connectivity or video display issues to ensure seamless communication access during instructional time
• Assist onsite school facilitators and students with virtual setup and platform navigation
Advocacy & Facilitation
• Support students in navigating communication barriers and developing independent self-advocacy skills
• Assist school staff in understanding the role of the remote educational interpreter and fostering an inclusive, visual learning environment
