Position Title: Remote Educational Sign Language Interpreter
Location: Minnesota (Remote)
Job Type: Full-Time | 1099 Contract
Schedule: Monday–Friday during school hours
Compensation: Competitive hourly rate based on experience and credentials
Position Overview
We are seeking a qualified and student-centered Educational Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services for K–12 students in Minnesota school settings. This fully remote opportunity is ideal for interpreters who are passionate about accessibility, communication equity, and supporting student success in educational environments.
The interpreter will facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students, teachers, staff, and peers in live virtual classroom settings and school-related activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide real-time virtual ASL interpretation for students in K–12 educational settings
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, school meetings, and related educational activities
- Collaborate with teachers, special education teams, and support staff
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional interpreting standards and ethics
- Support students’ communication access and educational participation
- Attend IEP meetings and staff meetings as needed
- Maintain accurate service documentation and scheduling records
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Interpreter Training Program (ITP)
- Previous experience interpreting in educational/K–12 settings preferred
- Strong receptive and expressive ASL skills
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Reliable high-speed internet and secure workspace
- Familiarity with virtual platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet
Minnesota Educational Interpreter Requirements
Candidates must meet Minnesota educational interpreter standards, including one of the following:
- RID certification (NIC or equivalent), OR
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 4.0 or higher on the Elementary or Secondary Performance Assessment and passing score on the EIPA Written Exam
Minnesota also requires educational interpreters to work toward certification and comply with applicable state interpreter qualification standards under Minnesota Statute 122A.31.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior virtual interpreting experience
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Knowledge of IEP processes and special education environments
- RID membership in good standing preferred
