Virtual Educational Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) - Pennsylvania
Qualifications
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field from an accredited program
• Active registration with the Pennsylvania Office for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (ODHH) as an Educational Interpreter (or immediate eligibility)
• Minimum passing score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) (or valid RID / NIC / NAD certification)
• Minimum of 2+ years of experience interpreting in an educational or pediatric setting (tele-interpreting experience preferred)
• Comprehensive fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE), or Pidgin Signed English (PSE)
• In-depth knowledge of the RID-NAD Code of Professional Conduct and educational interpreting ethics
• Comfortable navigating telepractice platforms, dual-screen setups, and high-speed video streaming environments
Key Responsibilities
Direct Educational Interpreting
• Provide real-time, accurate virtual sign language interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students across general education, special education, and elective classes
• Facilitate clear, two-way communication between the student, classroom teachers, peers, related service providers, and school administrators
• Interpret educational instructions, classroom discussions, announcements, assemblies, and extracurricular activities as designated in the student's IEP
• Convey the content, intent, and affective spirit of both spoken English and signed language faithfully without editorializing
Collaboration & Student Support
• Collaborate with teachers of the deaf (TOD), classroom educators, and educational support teams to preview vocabulary, lesson concepts, and instructional media
• Assist students in understanding the role of an interpreter, fostering communication independence, and developing self-advocacy skills
• Participate as a supportive, non-evaluative team member in virtual IEP meetings when requested
Professionalism & Ethics
• Strictly adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct, maintaining student confidentiality in compliance with FERPA guidelines
• Maintain professional boundaries while functioning effectively as an integral communication access provider in the virtual classroom
• Participate in ongoing professional development and skill-building activities to maintain state and national credentialing
Technology & Tele-Interpreting Delivery
• Utilize secure, high-definition video conferencing platforms with optimal lighting, neutral backgrounds, and high-contrast professional attire
• Maintain reliable high-speed internet and necessary hardware (external webcam, proper headset/mic) to ensure continuous, latency-free visual communication
• Coordinate with onsite school e-helpers or proctors to troubleshoot audio/video feeds and camera positioning for clear line-of-sight
