Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Auburn, CA
Make a positive difference for students by providing your expertise as an ASL Interpreter in an onsite, contract setting. This opportunity supports a 21-year-old student with Down Syndrome who is Deaf/Hard of Hearing and communicates using a combination of verbal language, American Sign Language, an AAC device, and his phone. You’ll work closely with both the student and educational staff, ensuring access to academics and smooth communication with peers throughout the school day.
Key Qualifications:
• Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
• Experience supporting individuals with multiple disabilities, preferably in a school or educational environment
• Knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
• Ability to facilitate communication among students, staff, and peers
• Patient, adaptable approach to assisting individuals with diverse needs
• Familiarity with hearing aids and Deaf/Hard of Hearing supports is valuable
Role Responsibilities:
• Offer direct interpretation and communication support between the student, staff, and peers
• Assist the student in accessing academic content throughout their school schedule
• Adapt communication strategies as needed, using ASL, verbal cues, and assistive technology
• Collaborate with educators and support personnel to meet the student’s daily needs
• Foster an inclusive, communicative environment, promoting the student’s independence and confidence
• Maintain confidentiality and sensitive documentation as required
