Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Rocklin, California

This contract opportunity focuses on supporting a 21-year-old student with Down Syndrome who is Deaf/Hard of Hearing. The position involves working closely with both the student and educational staff to promote academic success and meaningful communication throughout the school day. The student uses a combination of verbal communication, American Sign Language (ASL), hearing aids, an AAC device, and a mobile phone to connect with others. This role is essential for creating an inclusive, accessible learning environment and helping the student engage fully with peers and classroom activities.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Advanced proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required
- Prior experience supporting students with multiple disabilities highly desirable
- Familiarity with AAC devices and various communication methods preferred
- Ability to collaborate with teachers and staff in an educational setting
- Flexibility, patience, and a compassionate approach to individualized learning needs
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one sign language interpretation and communication support for the assigned student
- Facilitate academic engagement and interaction with peers and school personnel
- Adapt communication methods to meet the student’s unique needs, incorporating ASL, AAC device, and verbal cues
- Assist staff in understanding and implementing effective communication strategies
- Foster a supportive, respectful environment that empowers the student throughout the school day
