Skills and Requirements:
- Proven ability as a school-based Sign Language Interpreter
- EIPA score of 3.0 or higher
- Illinois State Board of Education PEL (Professional Educator License) as an Interpreter, or evidence of application in progress
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with educational interpreting best practices
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit
- Experience working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is highly valued
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, student interactions, and school activities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
- Work closely with classroom teachers and DHH staff to ensure full access to the curriculum
- Adapt interpreting styles to accommodate individual student needs and classroom environments
- Help foster an inclusive, supportive learning atmosphere
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
- Participate in staff meetings, IEP meetings, and professional development as needed
- Advocate for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and promote understanding of DHH access within the school community
