Position Summary
Spotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking a qualified and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to provide interpreting services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The interpreter will play a vital role in ensuring students have equitable access to instruction, school activities, and communication within the educational environment. This position supports meaningful participation in the classroom and fosters student success through effective communication and collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Provide accurate and effective American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for students throughout the school day.
Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, assignments, assessments, and educational activities.
Facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and teachers, administrators, staff, peers, and families.
Provide interpreting services during assemblies, field trips, extracurricular activities, and school-sponsored events.
Support student access to the general education curriculum and educational opportunities.
Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education personnel, related service providers, and administrators to address student communication needs.
Participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, staff meetings, and other school-related events requiring interpretation services.
Adapt interpreting methods and communication strategies to meet individual student needs and developmental levels.
Identify and communicate barriers that may impact student access to instruction or school activities.
Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations.
Adhere to professional interpreting standards, ethical guidelines, and district policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and sign language interpreting.
Possession of one of the following credentials:
VQAS Level III Certification (or equivalent qualification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing); or
Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Written Test with a minimum EIPA Performance Test score of 3.5.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and families.
Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical interpreting practices.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred Qualifications
Postsecondary education in interpreting, deaf studies, education, or a related field.
Previous experience providing interpreting services in a K-12 educational setting.
Experience supporting students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Knowledge of special education laws, procedures, and terminology.
Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary educational teams.
Familiarity with the communication and educational needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced ASL interpreting and receptive communication skills.
Understanding of educational interpreting best practices.
Strong organizational and time management abilities.
Ability to maintain professionalism in a dynamic educational environment.
Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, staff, and families.
Commitment to promoting inclusive and accessible learning experiences for all students.
Work Environment
This position is performed primarily within a school setting and may require participation in classroom activities, meetings, field trips, extracurricular programs, and other school-sponsored events. The interpreter must be able to perform duties effectively while maintaining professionalism, flexibility, and a student-centered approach.
