Sign Language Interpreter in Portsmouth, VA

Make a significant difference in students’ lives as a school-based Sign Language Interpreter for the upcoming academic year in the Virginia Beach area. This is a full-time, contract opportunity supporting elementary students in a school setting from late August 2026 through mid-June 2027. Interpreters will work primarily in one-to-one assignments, traveling between campuses as needed to cover diverse student needs. This position does not allow for virtual or hybrid work—on-site presence is required throughout the duration of the contract.
Key qualifications:
- Valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III required
- Strong preference for interpreters with EIPA score of 3.5 or higher; candidates with scores above 3.0 or a QAS score of 3 or better will also be considered
- Experience working with elementary-aged students in educational settings preferred
- Proficiency in a variety of sign language modalities; familiarity with Visaphonics is a plus but not mandatory
- Demonstrated reliability, adaptability, and commitment to supporting communication access for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
Core responsibilities:
- Provide clear, accurate interpretation between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) for assigned students in classroom and school-related settings
- Adapt interpreting style to meet the individual needs and learning levels of each student
- Support effective communication between students, peers, and instructional staff
- Travel to other school sites within the district as needed if assigned student is absent to ensure consistent interpreter support
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all school district policies and interpreting standards
