Sign Language Interpreter in Hampton, VA
Make a meaningful impact as a Sign Language Interpreter supporting a kindergarten student for the upcoming school year. This is a contract opportunity running from August 24, 2026, through June 9, 2027, requiring 35 hours per week. You'll collaborate with educational professionals to assist in classroom communication and foster inclusion, serving as a vital bridge between the deaf/hard-of-hearing student and their learning environment.
Key Qualifications:
- VQAS Level 3 or higher, or EIPA score of 3.0+
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience as a Sign Language Interpreter, preferably in a school setting
- Understanding of the needs of young children and ability to engage with kindergarten-age students
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to commit to onsite work (virtual interpreting is not considered for this role)
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide clear and effective sign language interpretation between the student, educators, and peers during classroom and school activities
- Assist the classroom teacher by facilitating communication, ensuring the student’s full participation and understanding
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all relevant school and district protocols
- Collaborate with the student’s educational team to monitor progress and support individualized education goals
- Adapt interpreting techniques to meet the developmental level of a kindergarten student
