Qualified interpreters will have:
- Proven experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter in a school or educational environment
- An ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview) score of 4.1 or higher
- Solid grasp of educational interpreting ethics, confidentiality standards, and classroom culture
- Ability to foster communication between students, staff, and faculty using ASL
- Adaptability to work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support personnel
- Willingness to work onsite, providing consistent support throughout the school day
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering 1:1 interpreting services for a designated student, facilitating classroom learning and participation
- Translating spoken English to American Sign Language and vice versa during lessons, activities, and meetings
- Clarifying classroom instructions, assignments, and important information to ensure student comprehension
- Assisting educators by relaying student questions and responses
- Maintaining accurate records of interpreting sessions and progress, as needed
- Cultivating an inclusive, supportive environment that honors each student’s individual needs
