What You’ll Contribute:
- Deliver clear and effective American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for students throughout the school day.
- Interpret a variety of academic and extracurricular settings, including classroom instruction, field trips, assemblies, and more.
- Bridge communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their peers, educators, and administrators.
- Support student access to curricula, adapting interpreting methods based on individual communication and developmental needs.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, special education professionals, related service staff, and families to remove communication barriers.
- Maintain strict confidentiality with regard to student records and sensitive information.
- Participate in IEP and staff meetings as needed, ensuring accurate interpretation for all.
- Uphold high professional standards in line with school district policy.
Ideal Background and Skills:
- Proficiency in ASL and sign language interpreting.
- VQAS Level III certification or equivalent (recognized by Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing), or EIPA Written Test and minimum EIPA Performance score of 3.5.
- Experience interpreting in a K-12 setting highly preferred.
- Working knowledge of special education procedures and supporting students with IEPs.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork abilities.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional interpreter training or credentials a plus.
