In this role, you’ll ensure that students who are deaf or hard of hearing have equal access to learning and communication, actively supporting their educational journey each day.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering accurate, effective sign language interpretation during classroom instruction, school activities, assemblies, and field trips
- Facilitating clear communication between students, teachers, staff, peers, and administrators
- Assisting students in fully participating in the general education curriculum and school environment
- Collaborating with teachers, special education teams, and related service providers to address students’ communication and educational needs
- Maintaining confidentiality of student information and adhering to all district policies and procedures
- Adapting interpreting methods to individual student needs and developmental levels
- Attending IEP meetings, staff meetings, and other relevant school sessions to provide interpreting services as needed
- Providing feedback to school personnel on communication barriers or needs that may impact student success
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and sign language interpreting
- VQAS Level III certification or equivalent recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or EIPA Written Test with a minimum performance score of 3.5
- Experience in K-12 educational settings preferred
- Knowledge of the educational needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
- Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality
- High school diploma or equivalent required; postsecondary education, interpreter training, or relevant credentials preferred
Preferred experience:
- Prior work as an educational sign language interpreter
- Experience supporting students with IEPs and collaborating with special education teams
