Step into an engaging role supporting K-12 students as a Sign Language Interpreter and American Sign Language educator in a vibrant educational environment near Norfolk, VA. This is a full-time, in-person position ideal for professionals passionate about fostering communication access and inclusion in school settings. As an itinerant role, you’ll have the opportunity to work across four distinct school sites, offering variety and the chance to impact multiple school communities.
The position is scheduled to begin in August, with a potential orientation and training period available in July 2025 to ensure you feel well-prepared and supported. Daily hours are generally 7:30am-3:00pm, allowing for a consistent routine throughout the week. In addition, you can look forward to a collaborative atmosphere and interaction with a dedicated support team, including a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) and Clinical Fellow (CF).
Key qualifications and experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and prior experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in school environments
- Experience teaching or supporting instruction in ASL, preferably in K-12 settings
- Ability to adapt to an itinerant schedule, rotating across multiple school sites
- Flexibility, strong communication skills, and a deep commitment to student success
- Current certification or licensure as required by state and district guidelines (or willingness to obtain)
Responsibilities include:
- Providing real-time sign language interpretation for students, staff, and classroom instruction
- Supporting ASL instruction as needed
- Collaborating with educators, staff, and families to ensure access and inclusion for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students
- Assisting with individualized student communication plans across multiple sites
