Sign Language Interpreter - School-Based
Soliant is seeking 5 qualified Sign Language Interpreters (SLIs) to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students near Durham, California, for the 2026–2027 school year.
These opportunities are ideal for experienced interpreters who are passionate about facilitating effective communication and supporting students' academic, vocational, and daily living needs in a school-based environment.
Assignment Details
Position: Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)
Location: Durham, CA
Openings: 5
Schedule: Full-Time
Hours: Approximately 30 hours per week / 6 hours per day
Duration: ASAP – Full 2026–2027 School Year
Setting: Onsite Only
Grade Levels: Middle and High School
Responsibilities
Facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, their hearing peers, classroom teachers, and other school personnel.
Provide accurate sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting services.
Support students in accessing academic instruction and participating fully in the classroom environment.
Assist students with academic subjects such as reading, writing, and math as appropriate.
Support students with vocational and/or independent living skills when applicable.
Monitor and support students during classroom, outdoor, and community-based activities.
Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, administrators, and other members of the educational team.
Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries within the school environment.
Provide communication support that promotes student access, participation, and educational success.
Required Qualifications
Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), OR
Candidates with an EIPA score below 4.0 may also be considered.
Strong ASL and English communication skills.
Ability to provide effective sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation.
Ability to work effectively with students in a school-based environment.
Ability to work onsite, approximately 30 hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter in a school setting.
Experience supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
Experience working with middle and/or high school students.
Familiarity with academic, vocational, and independent living support.
Strong ability to collaborate with classroom teachers and multidisciplinary educational teams.
Candidate Preferences
