Make a meaningful difference each day by supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing in an educational setting. As a contract Sign Language Interpreter, you’ll facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, staff, and peers to help ensure full participation and access to learning across all school environments.
What You’ll Do:
- Deliver accurate and effective sign language interpretation for classroom instruction, school activities, assemblies, and events.
- Foster communication between students, educators, and peers throughout the school day.
- Support students’ access to the general education curriculum and participation in all aspects of the school environment.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education teams, and related service providers to address student communication and educational needs.
- Apply various interpreting approaches adapted to individual student developmental levels.
- Participate in IEP meetings, staff conferences, and other school events when interpreting is needed.
- Provide timely feedback regarding communication needs or barriers that may impact student access to instruction.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and uphold school policies and professional standards.
What We’re Looking For:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and formal sign language interpreting skills.
- VQAS Level III certification or other Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing–recognized qualifications, or an EIPA Performance Test score of 3.5 or higher (with written test completion), as required.
- Experience providing interpreting services in a K-12 educational setting is preferred.
- Understanding of the unique educational needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills with the ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional interpreter training or related education highly valued.
