Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Demonstrated fluency in ASL and expertise in sign language interpretation
- VQAS Level III certification or equivalent recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or EIPA Written Test plus minimum EIPA Performance Test score of 3.5
- Prior experience in a K-12 educational setting preferred
- Strong understanding of the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards
- High school diploma or equivalent required; further interpreter training or credentials strongly preferred
- Background supporting students with IEPs and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams is a plus
Role Responsibilities:
- Accurately interpret classroom instruction, discussions, school events, and meetings
- Ensure students’ access to instruction, the school environment, and extra-curricular activities
- Work closely with teachers, special education staff, related service providers, and families
- Adapt interpreting techniques to meet each student’s communication needs and developmental level
- Participate in IEP and staff meetings as needed for interpreting services
- Uphold confidentiality regarding all student information
- Share insights on communication needs or barriers to support student success
