Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Suffolk, Virginia

If you’re passionate about supporting students and have expertise in sign language interpretation, this contract opportunity offers a rewarding environment in an educational setting. You’ll play a vital part in helping students who are deaf or hard of hearing access instruction and participate fully in school activities. The position is full-time, offering 37.5 hours per week, and will continue through the end of the current school year.
Qualifications:
- Valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a score of 3.5 or higher, along with a passing score on the written test
- Alternative credentials recognized as equivalent by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH)
- Experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in school settings preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct sign language interpreting services for students and staff during lessons, meetings, and extra-curricular activities
- Accurately interpret classroom content to facilitate understanding and inclusion
- Collaborate with teachers, special education teams, and other staff to ensure each student’s learning and communication needs are met
- Support a positive and respectful classroom environment
- Maintain appropriate documentation and adhere to all school policies and guidelines
- Adapt interpreting techniques to suit individual student needs
