Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Tacoma, Washington
Step into a dynamic educational setting as a dedicated American Sign Language (ASL) educator for a long-term substitute opportunity. From January 4th through June 17th, you will deliver engaging direct instruction to motivated students at levels ASL 1, 2, 3, and 4 within Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. This unique contract role is designed for experienced sign language professionals and educators passionate about developing students' sign language skills and cultural understanding.
Ideal candidates for this role embody enthusiasm for teaching and supporting student growth, while also demonstrating expertise in sign language. A traditional teaching certificate is not required; however, you must meet the criteria for a Conditional CTE Certificate with district support initiating the application process.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and fluency in both ASL and English
- Prior experience as a Sign Language Interpreter or as an ASL educator (schools or similar settings preferred)
- Ability to meet minimum requirements for a Conditional CTE Certificate
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct ASL instruction to students in courses ranging from introductory to advanced levels (ASL 1-4)
- Develop and adapt lesson plans to support student learning and course objectives
- Cultivate an engaging classroom environment that encourages language acquisition and cultural awareness
- Monitor student progress and provide regular feedback
- Collaborate with colleagues and staff to promote student success
