In this rewarding, school-based contract position, you’ll provide vital communication access for an elementary student in a mainstream classroom, working full-time hours (35 hours a week). You’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring educational engagement and inclusion by facilitating clear, effective communication between the student, teachers, and peers throughout the school day.
Qualifications and Desired Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Valid Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.0 or higher
- Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) for interpreting in schools, or eligibility with an application in progress
- Experience in elementary or K-12 school environments preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive educational atmosphere
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one sign language interpretation for an elementary student during all instructional and school-related activities
- Accurately convey spoken content into ASL and interpret student responses for staff and classmates
- Support classroom participation, engagement, and learning objectives
- Collaborate with teachers, special education teams, and families to meet the student’s communication needs
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times
