Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Dekalb, Illinois

As a vital link between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and the school community, you’ll help ensure equal access to education and foster positive communication every day.
Key Qualifications:
- Valid Sign Language Interpreter certification with a proficiency level of 3.5 or higher (or 3.0 with ISBE approval)
- ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) certification required
- Previous experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter in educational settings preferred
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in a school environment
- Flexibility and adaptability to work with students across various age groups and classroom settings
Primary Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa during classroom instruction, assemblies, meetings, and school events
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to support the specific communication needs and educational goals of assigned students
- Ensure accurate and effective communication at all times while fostering an inclusive classroom experience
- Support students with additional needs as directed by educational staff
- Maintain accurate records and uphold ethical standards for interpreters in education
