Step into a fulfilling 1:1 role supporting a middle school student with bilateral cochlear implants as a Sign Language Interpreter. This contract assignment offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by facilitating communication in an educational setting. You will work closely with a 6th-grade student throughout the standard school day, helping enhance access and ensuring a productive, inclusive learning environment.
Key Qualifications:
- National certification or equivalent credentials as a Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Prior experience interpreting in an educational environment, especially with students who have cochlear implants, is highly valued
- Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and adaptability
- Ability to collaborate with educators and support staff to tailor communication strategies
- Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethical standards
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 sign language interpretation between the student and staff during all classroom activities, from 7:35 am to 2:20 pm daily
- Adapt interpreting techniques for various subject areas, supporting both academic learning and social engagement
- Partner with classroom teachers and support personnel to address unique communication needs related to bilateral cochlear implants
- Facilitate clear, accessible communication during classroom interactions, small group work, and school events as needed
- Contribute to creating a positive, inclusive learning environment where the student can thrive both academically and socially
