Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Mchenry, Illinois
Make a positive difference in a middle school student's educational journey by providing one-on-one support as a Sign Language Interpreter. In this contract role, you'll work closely with a 6th grade student who uses bilateral cochlear implants, ensuring access to classroom instruction and active participation throughout the school day. Your expertise in sign language interpretation will help bridge communication and make learning more inclusive and engaging.
This is a daytime position, following school hours from 7:35 am to 2:20 pm, giving you a predictable schedule while allowing you to build a strong rapport with the student you support.
Key Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience as a Sign Language Interpreter within educational settings
- Ability to provide clear, accurate interpretation for academic content and social interaction
- Understanding of the unique needs of students with hearing devices such as cochlear implants
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- National or state interpreting certification preferred
Primary Responsibilities:
- Deliver 1:1 sign language interpretation services for a middle schooler in classroom and school-related settings
- Facilitate effective communication between the student, teachers, and peers
- Adapt interpreting techniques to suit the student's specific language level and needs
- Collaborate with the educational team to foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment
- Respect confidentiality while maintaining professionalism at all times
