This is a 1:1 position supporting a bright and eager kindergarten girl who is learning sign language at a remarkable pace. She’ll benefit from foundational guidance as she becomes more confident with communication. You’ll also collaborate with a kindergarten teacher who is already fluent in sign, ensuring a supportive and cooperative classroom dynamic.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in a school setting, particularly with young children, is strongly encouraged
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to provide appropriate language models and support for foundational sign language learning
- Relevant certification or licensure to serve as a school interpreter (as required by state regulations)
Responsibilities:
- Offer direct 1:1 interpreting services during instructional and classroom activities
- Foster language acquisition and self-advocacy for the student
- Collaborate with the classroom teacher and other staff to support a positive learning environment
- Adapt interpreting strategies as the student’s language skills grow
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
