Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Arlington Heights, IL
Make a difference in the lives of students by providing essential support as a Sign Language Interpreter for a full school year. This impactful contract position is based near Arlington Heights, IL, and involves traveling throughout various districts in Lake County. Working with students from early childhood through 12th grade, you'll play a pivotal role in fostering access and inclusion for those who are visually impaired.
This is a full-time role with scheduled hours from 8:00am to 3:30pm daily, guaranteed at 7.5 hours per day (including lunch). You’ll manage a caseload of approximately 12 to 18 students, collaborating with educators and staff to support diverse communication needs.
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience interpreting in educational settings is strongly preferred
- Comfort working with students across early childhood to 12th grade
- Ability to adapt communication styles to meet individual student needs
- Valid certification or licensure as required for school-based interpreters
- Strong organization and time management skills, especially when traveling between districts
- Passion for supporting inclusivity and accessibility in education
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately interpret class lessons, activities, and communications
- Facilitate understanding between students and staff across various educational settings
- Work collaboratively with Teachers of the Visually Impaired and other educational professionals
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all interactions
- Travel throughout assigned districts as required to provide consistent services
