Make a meaningful impact as an in-person sign language interpreter supporting high school students. This contract opportunity is located near Canton, OH and focuses on working closely with a 9th grade deaf student. The student spends part of the day in a self-contained resource room and the remainder in an inclusion setting, ensuring exposure to a variety of educational experiences. A dedicated paraprofessional will also be available for additional support. Although the student has cochlear implants, interpreting plays a vital role in their learning and participation.
Key qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience providing interpretation in educational settings.
- Ability to effectively interpret in both structured and mainstream classroom environments.
- Sensitivity to the nuances of communication with students who use cochlear implants but depend greatly on interpreting services.
- Familiarity with IEP and accommodations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills; comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Responsibilities include:
- Interpreting classroom instruction, discussions, and activities throughout the student’s school day (a blend of resource room and inclusion settings).
- Facilitating communication between the student, teachers, and peers to support full participation in both academic and social aspects of school life.
- Working alongside a paraprofessional and adjusting interpreting strategies as needed for optimal student access.
- Supporting the educational goals and accommodations specified in the student’s learning plan.
- Maintaining ethical boundaries and confidentiality at all times.
