Make a profound impact by supporting a 9th grade student as their in-person Sign Language Interpreter for the upcoming school year. This contract opportunity offers an engaging experience working one-on-one with a deaf student who, while equipped with cochlear implants, depends greatly on fingerspelling and sign language to access classroom content and socialize with peers.
In this role, you’ll work closely with the student and educational team—including a dedicated paraprofessional—across both a self-contained resource setting for three hours per day and a general education environment the remainder of the school day. Your ability to interpret seamlessly will be crucial in facilitating active classroom participation and helping the student excel both academically and socially.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience interpreting in educational settings
- Ability to adapt interpreting style to different classroom settings—resource room and inclusion classrooms
- Knowledge of cochlear implants and familiarity supporting students who rely on both spoken language and interpreting
- Credentialed or certified as a sign language interpreter, with school-based experience preferred
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities
Role Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate, real-time sign language interpretation for all academic lessons, activities, and school events
- Work collaboratively with educators, a paraprofessional, and related service providers
- Support effective communication between the student and both peers and staff
- Adjust interpreting style and pace as needed for different learning environments and content
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and encouraging setting for the student
