Make a difference as an in-person sign language interpreter working closely with a 9th grade student who is deaf. In this contract role, you'll facilitate communication and support access to education in both a self-contained resource setting and the broader inclusion environment. The student uses cochlear implants but relies primarily on interpreting services to fully participate in academic and social experiences. A paraprofessional is available to assist. The assignment covers the period from August 15 to August 24.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and demonstrated experience as an educational interpreter
- Familiarity with interpreting for students with cochlear implants a plus
- Ability to adapt interpreting style to varied settings—inclusion classrooms and a resource room
- Strong commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and inclusion
- Previous work in educational settings, especially with secondary students, preferred
Role Responsibilities:
- Provide interpretation for a 9th grade deaf student during classroom instruction, group work, and activities
- Facilitate clear communication between the student, peers, teachers, and staff throughout the school day
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and paraprofessionals to ensure the best learning experience
- Support the student in both self-contained and inclusion environments for the assigned time frames
- Encourage student independence and self-advocacy while responding to individual learning needs
