This full-time, contract position is located near Dekalb, IL, providing valuable assistance for elementary aged students (K-5th) in an engaging classroom environment. You’ll be working 35 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Ideal candidates are passionate about facilitating communication and access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Your expertise will play a key role in helping these learners succeed and feel included in every aspect of their education.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience interpreting in educational settings
- Valid certification or licensure as a Sign Language Interpreter, as applicable by state standards
- Previous experience with school-aged children, preferably in elementary grades
- Ability to accurately convey both spoken and signed information in classroom and school settings
- Strong listening, communication, and interpersonal skills
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and activities between staff and students who use sign language
- Support teacher instructions and clarify lesson content as needed
- Collaborate closely with teachers, support staff, and educational teams to ensure student success and engagement
- Maintain strict confidentiality about student needs and school matters
- Assist in adapting educational materials when necessary to enhance student understanding
