Key Qualifications:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a thorough understanding of Deaf culture and communication needs.
- Previous experience interpreting in educational settings, particularly with elementary-aged students.
- Certification appropriate for educational interpreting assignments, or eligibility to obtain.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with educators, staff, and students.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and accessible learning environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Interpret verbal communication in academic and social situations between students, staff, and peers using ASL.
- Support direct and indirect classroom instruction, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Prepare for classroom lessons, activities, and adapt interpreting style to the educational context.
- Foster positive relationships with students, encouraging growth and self-advocacy.
- Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as needed, serving as a language and cultural resource.
