Qualifications and Preferred Experience:
- High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor's degree strongly preferred
- Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English
- EIPA score meeting New Jersey state requirements, or possession of national interpreter certification preferred
- Previous experience supporting students in a school environment is highly valued
- Comprehensive understanding of Deaf culture and best practices for supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Ability to pass all New Jersey mandated background screenings
Primary Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken and signed communication in classroom and school activities to ensure equal access to curriculum and extracurricular events
- Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and other professionals to support student learning and participation
- Adapt communication styles to suit diverse school situations and student needs
- Assist in developing an inclusive learning environment that respects and promotes deaf culture
- Model appropriate use of ASL and act as a cultural and linguistic resource for the school community
