Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Joliet, Illinois
Step into an engaging opportunity supporting diverse students as a skilled Sign Language Interpreter for the upcoming school year. This contract role runs from July 29 to May 25, offering steady hours from 8:05 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. each weekday. You’ll be playing a crucial part in an inclusive educational environment, assisting early childhood through 3rd grade children with a range of communication needs.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and activities for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH)
- Collaborate with teachers, service providers, and school personnel to ensure full participation for all students
- Provide interpreting services in both mainstream and DHH-specific settings
- Adapt interpreting methods to meet the needs of students from EC (early childhood) through 3rd grade
- Support communication in varied learning environments throughout the school day
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times
Qualifications:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and proficiency in educational interpreting
- Prior experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter, preferably in a school setting
- Knowledge of child development and school culture for early childhood and elementary students
- Ability to adapt quickly between different age groups and learning settings
- Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills
- State or national interpreter certification preferred
