Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting students with your expertise as a Sign Language Interpreter. This full-time position is situated in the vibrant Virginia Beach area, with a start date of August 25, 2026, continuing through mid-June 2027. Work Monday through Friday supporting students in the school environment—helping to bridge communication and foster inclusion.
In this role, you will be primarily assigned to 1:1 interpreting, most likely with elementary-aged students. Flexibility is key—interpreters are not tied to a single campus and may be asked to provide coverage at various sites if their assigned student is absent. Visaphonics is a preferred communication method but not required.
Key qualifications include:
- Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III
- Strong preference for EIPA Score of 3.5+ (district will consider candidates with a 3.0+ for interviews) or QAS Score of 3 or higher
- Comfortable interpreting in school settings and adapting to different ages and learning environments
- Ability to manage a full-time (35-hour) weekly schedule, Monday through Friday
- Experience or strong interest in 1:1 educational interpreting
- Collaborative spirit and openness to supporting students across various schools as needed
Typical responsibilities:
- Facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their peers, teachers, and staff
- Interpret classroom lessons, activities, and school events in real time
- Adapt communication strategies to meet individual student needs
- Maintain confidentiality and remain professional in all educational settings
- Collaborate with educational professionals and families as needed to support student success
