Virtual Educational Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) - Nebraska
Qualifications
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field from an accredited program
• Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 4.0 or higher (or valid RID/NIC certification, NAD IV+, or QAST IV+)
• Passing score on the EIPA Written Test (or equivalent knowledge exam)
• Compliance with Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) Rule 51 standards for educational interpreters
• Minimum of 2+ years of experience (K-12 educational interpreting and/or tele-interpreting preferred)
• Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and/or Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE)
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and time-management skills
• Comfortable using virtual platforms, remote meeting tools, and dual-monitor/video setups
Key Responsibilities
Interpreting & Classroom Support
• Provide real-time virtual educational interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students across general education and special education classes
• Accurately facilitate expressive and receptive communication between students, hearing teachers, staff, and peers
• Interpret classroom lectures, group discussions, instructional videos, assemblies, and school-wide announcements
• Adapt signing style to match the developmental, linguistic, and educational needs of the individual student
Collaboration & Teamwork
• Collaborate with classroom teachers, Teachers of the Deaf (TOD/DHH), case managers, and speech-language pathologists to support student access
• Provide input regarding visual accessibility, line of sight, and optimal camera/screen positioning during remote instruction
• Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary conferences, and staffing consultations as requested
Professional Standards & Ethics
• Adhere strictly to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and Educational Interpreter Code of Ethics
• Maintain professional boundaries while actively supporting student independence and self-advocacy in the virtual classroom
• Keep student records and communication confidential in accordance with FERPA and district guidelines
Technology & Virtual Delivery
• Utilize secure video conferencing platforms and digital tools to deliver clear, uninterrupted visual interpreting
• Troubleshoot basic connectivity or visual display issues to maintain continuous communication access during lessons
• Assist onsite school staff and students with camera angle adjustments and platform navigation for effective remote interpreting
Advocacy & Facilitation
• Support students in navigating communication barriers and developing independent communication strategies
• Assist school staff in understanding the role of the virtual educational interpreter and best practices for inclusive, visual learning environments
