Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Hilliard, Ohio
Make a meaningful impact helping a first-grade student thrive in an inclusive academic environment as a Sign Language Interpreter. This in-person assignment supports a bright, full-time student with cochlear implants who benefits from a total communication approach in a general education classroom. The student participates alongside peers and receives tailored support in Math and Reading through an intervention specialist and therapies from an OT and SLP. You’ll bridge communication, ensuring equal access to instruction, activities, and social interactions.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter in school or pediatric settings
- Ability to facilitate communication in both educational and social contexts
- Familiarity with total communication strategies, especially for young learners
- Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, and respect for student privacy
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with teaching staff, therapists, and administrators
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction and peer interactions for a first-grade student
- Modify and adapt signing style to support comprehension and student engagement
- Collaborate with teachers, intervention specialists, OT, and SLP to provide consistent communication access
- Accompany the student throughout the school day, including during general education and pull-out sessions
- Support student participation during academic tasks, group work, and school activities
- Maintain accurate records and provide feedback to support the student’s IEP objectives
