Sign Language Interpreter in Westerville, OH

Support the academic experience of a first-grade student with cochlear implants by providing in-person sign language interpretation in an inclusive school environment. This contract opportunity centers on facilitating communication and access to learning for a young learner who benefits from a total communication approach. You’ll work within a collaborative setting alongside educational professionals, including an intervention specialist, occupational therapist, and speech-language pathologist. The student spends most of the day in the general education classroom, leaving for individualized math and reading instruction.
Key Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience as a sign language interpreter within educational settings
- Familiarity with supporting children who use cochlear implants or assistive hearing technology
- Understanding of total communication methods (combining signed, spoken, and visual cues)
- Ability to adapt interpreting styles to suit instructional content and the individual needs of the student
- Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with teachers and support staff
- Certification or relevant credentials as a sign language interpreter preferred
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide direct sign language interpretation for a first-grade student in all general education classroom activities
- Facilitate communication between the student, educators, and classmates throughout the school day
- Assist the student’s participation and understanding during core instruction and classroom interactions
- Adapt interpreting techniques to complement the student’s individualized academic and therapeutic sessions
- Support the student’s transition between instructional environments (classroom, intervention pull-outs)
