Position Overview
- We are seeking a qualified and licensed Sign Language Interpreter to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing during the 2026–2027 school year. The interpreter will provide communication access in educational settings by facilitating accurate and effective interpretation between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL). This role requires collaboration with teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to ensure students have full access to instructional and extracurricular activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide interpreting services between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) in classroom, small-group, and school-related settings.
- Facilitate communication between students, teachers, staff, peers, and other stakeholders.
- Interpret instructional content, classroom discussions, assemblies, meetings, field trips, and extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics and standards of practice.
- Collaborate with educational teams to support student access and participation in the learning environment.
- Assist in promoting effective communication strategies within the school setting.
- Participate in team meetings, professional development activities, and school-related functions as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate service documentation and comply with district policies and procedures.
- Support a positive, inclusive, and accessible educational environment for students.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Illinois licensure, approval, or certification required to provide educational interpreting services.
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and best practices for supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards in educational settings.
