This full-time, contract position offers the chance to work closely in a K-12 educational setting in the vibrant Virginia Beach area. Interpreters will primarily be assigned to one-on-one roles with elementary-aged students, but flexibility is key—opportunities to provide coverage at other locations may arise should your assigned student be absent. Visaphonics is a preferred communicative approach, but interpreters with proficiency in other methods are welcomed and encouraged to apply.
Key Qualifications:
- Valid VA Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III required
- Strong preference for EIPA score of 3.5; candidates with scores above 3.0 are welcome to interview
- Alternatively, a QAS score of 3 or better is acceptable
- Prior experience serving as a Sign Language Interpreter in a school environment is highly desired
- Adaptable communication skills and a collaborative team spirit
- Commitment to confidentiality, student advocacy, and ethical interpreting practices
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate clear and accurate communication between students and educational staff
- Support student access to classroom instruction, activities, and behavioral support
- Collaborate with teachers and related service providers to adapt communication modes for individual student needs
- Maintain professional boundaries and accurate records of interpreting services
- Serve as a flexible resource within the district, stepping in as needed for coverage and support
This contract spans from late August through mid-June, aligning with the school calendar and offering a consistent Monday through Friday schedule at 35 hours per week.
