Step into a fulfilling role supporting the communication needs of students as a contract Sign Language Interpreter working throughout the Virginia Beach area. This full-time opportunity starts August 25, 2026, and continues through June 15, 2027, with a consistent Monday through Friday schedule totaling 35 hours each week. You’ll serve as a 1:1 interpreter, primarily assisting elementary students, ensuring meaningful access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners within a diverse educational environment.
Key Qualifications:
- Hold a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification
- Preferred: Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5; candidates with EIPA of 3.0 or above, or QAS score of 3+, will be considered
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and commitment to best practices in educational interpreting
- Comfortable being assigned to various schools as needs arise—flexibility is valued
- Effective communicator with staff, students, and families
- Visaphonics experience is a plus but not mandatory
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 sign language interpretation for assigned students, fostering inclusive participation in the classroom and throughout the school day
- Adapt communication style to suit the student’s needs, collaborating closely with educators and support staff
- Travel between different campuses if the assigned student is absent, offering coverage for other interpreting needs
- Maintain professionalism and adhere to confidentiality standards regarding student information and classroom matters
- Support classroom learning, activities, and special events as directed by faculty
